What is the Best Way to Clean My Steering Wheel to Prevent Illness?

Tips for Cleaning Your Vehicle’s Steering Wheel

Now more than ever, people are concerned about the cleanliness of the things they touch. And rightly so! There are many items that we touch throughout the day that can easily be covered in germs that can make us good and sick.

One item that you should take some time to clean – especially now with the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak – is your vehicle’s steering wheel. You typically touch your steering wheel multiple times a day, and whatever dirty and germ-infested items you touched before getting into your vehicle (like the fuel pump at the gas station), those germs will transfer to your steering wheel and can make you sick. And coughing and sneezing on your steering wheel always leave a thick (but invisible) coat of germs.

How Do I Clean My Vehicle’s Steering Wheel?

All you need is a paper towel or clean cloth and your favorite spraying disinfectant. Squirt some of the disinfectant onto the cloth/paper towel and give the steering wheel a good wipe-down. Keeping a pack of baby wipes and a bottle of hand sanitizer in your vehicle is always a good idea as well.

There is no fast rule as to how often you need to clean your steering wheel. Normally, we recommend doing it at least once every season, though you might want to do it once a day with the current Coronavirus outbreak.
